Sealcoating is the process of spraying or squeegeeing a protective coating onto an asphalt surface to reduce degradation and prolong its life. The process has been utilized in the USA since the early 1960's and is now a recognized method of asphalt maintenance in the UK .

Left untreated, asphalt areas will deteriorate rapidly. The asphalt binder that holds the aggregate together begins to oxidize under UV rays turning the asphalt from a rich black to a brown and grey colour. It starts to weather, losing its binding properties, following which moisture and oil penetrate the asphalt causing further damage and deterioration.
